Villawood refugees

This is such a horrible story. But there is an exception – Sydney’s finest

Meanwhile, a small group of activists have chained themselves to the front counter of the Sydney office of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Police said about nine activists, understood to be from the Anti-Deportation Alliance, entered the building at Railway Square just after 4pm.

A member of the group, Shane Reside, who did not take part in the demonstration, said the activists would not leave until the men at Villawood were released from detention.

Rachel Rowe, 25, one of the activists inside the building, said some of them had locked their necks to the front counter.

“We’re here to echo the demands of the detainees,” Ms Rowe said as about a dozen police arrived.

“Obviously [their demands] are not being heard because they’ve been on the roof for over 30 hours, people have cut themselves [and] one person is dead.

“We’re here in solidarity.”
